OMG – I hate this word – Procrastination!
For those of you who have not come across this word before – ‘procrastination’ is basically the practice of carrying out less urgent tasks in preference to more urgent ones, or doing more pleasurable things in place of less pleasurable ones, and thus putting off impending tasks to a later time, sometimes to the “last minute” before the deadline!
I’m sure that we have all done it at some point and to be honest, I have mastered the art of putting things off pretty well! Things I find boring and tedious, even though you know that at some point you are finally going to have get on with it and get these tasks done! But OMG it is so dull, I let myself be distracted with anything except what I’m actually meant to be doing instead!
I moved to London last August and I hate to admit this but, I still have boxes to unpack! It has only been in the last month or so that I have decided to do something about it. Which got me thinking, why do we prolong such things? It has been nearly a year and this task has been floating around my brain for this long, taking up valuable thinking space in my mind which could have been used for other more important matters!
Most people will agree that it is better to get tasks done as soon as possible. As the famous saying goes “Never put off until tomorrow, what you can do today”. If you put it off today – who knows what will crop up tomorrow to prevent you from finishing it again?
Sometimes when a task or project seem particularly monotonous, it can be easier to break it into smaller, much more manageable chunks. If the task is especially tiresome (like unpacking and sorting all of my boxes), I find it easier if I play some good music to energise me and get me in the mood!
So come on! What are you putting off until tomorrow that you could and probably should be doing today? Maybe you need to get your CV updated? Maybe you need to be thinking about your career – don’t put off planning for your future because before you know it, you will be several years down the line, wondering what you did with your life and how it got to this stage!
